Avon Book is a small bookshop that specialises in used books. It also has a modest collection of new books.

Avon was founded in 1941 to compete with Pocket Books as a publisher of paperbacks. They published a range of titles that included westerns as well as whodunit mysteries that featured colorful covers. These were popular pulp novels that were away from the literary Pocket Books in terms of the appeal to readers.

The Story

Avon began as a door to door book salesman, David H. McConnell. He used a popular trick to get women to listen. He would offer his customers a small bottle of perfume (named after the Shakespearean town Stratford-on-Avon), in exchange for a few minutes of their time, to listen to him talk about his books.

Avon soon made more money than it earned from its books. This allowed the company expand and improve its facilities as well as to develop other products such as makeup, skincare and even fragrances for men. It also allowed Avon to invest in philanthropic causes like helping women find jobs and tackling domestic violence.

Avon is currently the sole publisher of romance novels, though it will occasionally publish other genres, like fiction. HarperCollins owns Harlequin and Avon. Avon was owned until the mid-90s by the Hearst Corporation. It is now part of Newscorp.

Newscorp's acquisition in 1999 of Hearst Publishing resulted in the decision to focus exclusively on romance, and drop the other genres. In the 2000s, Avon has specialized in historical romance and avon book January 2023 has been referred to as "the house that history built." Authors like Lisa Kleypas, Connie Mason, Stephanie Laurens, Julia Quinn and Beverly Jenkins have published their work through the company.

Avon also published digest-sized paperbacks, like Modern Short Story Monthly and Avon Fantasy Reader, a collection that is still popular even today. They were often accompanied by movie tie-in editions. Avon also published non-romance and hardcover paperbacks, but these were sold to the Hearst Corporation's other publisher Morrow after Hearst bought Avon in 1959.

This book is an excellent example of Darrow's ability to develop a story about Avon. He also re-creates the bantering dialogue style that Blake's 7 became famous for. However, unless you're a Blake's 7 fan it's not for you. The relationship between Avon and Vila is the central theme of the story and they clearly share a mutual respect for one another, but they have a strong dislike of their cowardice and ruthlessness.

There are some genuinely captivating scenes in which Avon is forced to make the difficult decisions to protect his team, and this reveals his soft side. The characters have plenty of depth, and each has a unique persona that makes them relatable. This is a story that will leave you wanting more. The writing is flawless and there's an authentic sense of the world in which it takes place. It's a masterpiece by an author at the peak of her ability.

The Setting

Manko's even-handed treatment of Avon in this book is admirable. She lauds the former California Perfume Company for breaking away from the traditional economic role that women were forced to play in the 19th and 20th centuries in America. However she also shows how its rhetoric sugarcoated what in reality was an economic concept that was radical.

Avon has a broad selection of female-oriented novels and also a collection of thrillers and crime. The list of children's books is expanding. It is the publisher for the best-selling CL Taylor and Katerina Diamond, among many other authors.

Avon's commitment to bringing the best of commercial fiction to the broadest possible audience remains today. Avon books are dynamic, diverse and include some of the best talent in contemporary literature. The company also has a long and proud history of publishing the very top in historical fiction, particularly in the genre of historical romance. Often known as the house that invented the historical romance, Avon is still the publisher of choice for authors like Tessa Dare and Lisa Kleypas.

The Author

Avon Books, the division of HarperCollins that publishes romance novels, was founded as a book publisher for paperbacks in 1941. Joseph Meyers and Edna Meyers Williams created them to create a rival to Pocket Books. They hired sister and brother writers to create a stable of writers known as "Love's Leading Ladies" that included Kathleen Woodiwiss, Rosemary Rogers and others. The first Avons were similar to the pocket books and were a subject of a lawsuit by Pocket Books, but they had a great success due to their focus on the mass market.

In the 1950's, Avon was selling millions of books a year. Their attractive covers and mass market appeal allowed them to sell the type of pulp fiction mainstream publishers were hesitant to publish. They were so successful, in actual, that the Hearst Corporation bought them in 1959.

The Hearst Corporation changed the direction of Avon's publications by adding more literary works to their catalog. Avon began releasing digest-format papers in series like Murder Mystery Monthly or Modern Short Story Monthly. Some of these are highly valued in the present due to their high-end quality and their rarity.

The publication in 1972 of Kathleen Woodiwiss' sexually explicit novel, The Flame and the Flower was a major change in direction for Avon. They would publish a number of other sexy romance books like 1974's The Wolf and the Dove and later Rosemary Rogers' Sweet Savage Love. These new releases made earlier Avon romances more romantic with their purple-prosed love scenes appear tame.
